Action games have always been the most direct and exhilarating part of my gaming life. Unlike strategy games, which demand meticulous, long-term thinking, the charm of action games often lies in split-second decisions, extreme reflexes, and the sheer thrill that flows from the controller to my fingertips. A perfect dodge, a seamless combo, or a nail-biting counterattack can make my heart race and adrenaline surge. In recent years, action games have not only pushed operational limits but have also incorporated more creativity in storytelling, atmosphere, and level design, making it possible to combine “pure combat fun” with “deep immersion.
This year, I’ve experienced a large number of new releases, but a few have left me restless even after completing them. They didn’t just push me to challenge my limits again and again—they rewarded me with a strong sense of achievement and satisfaction after every battle. Let me take you through the five action masterpieces that had me utterly hooked, and see how they strike the perfect balance between reaction speed and pure pleasure.
1. Stellar Blade
When I first saw the trailer for Stellar Blade, I was immediately drawn to its intense sci-fi post-apocalyptic vibe. Massive mechanical ruins, desolate urban wastelands, and the protagonist Eve’s sharp, fluid combat movements all made me desperate to get my hands on the game. Once I did, I found it was not just “good-looking,” but a hardcore test of reflexes and precision.
The combat favors fast-paced melee engagements, requiring me to keep my eyes on every detail of the enemy’s movements, precisely identify the start of their attacks, and counter with dodges or parries. Perfectly timed counters unlock devastating retaliation skills that deal explosive damage. This “dancing on the blade’s edge” sensation was addictive, and each flawless parry felt like surpassing my own limits.
The level design isn’t just a straightforward, linear push. Beyond combat, it offers exploration, hidden collectibles, puzzle mechanisms, and even optional side bosses to keep my curiosity alive between fights. The visuals are top-tier—right down to the gleam on enemies and the texture of the metal flooring—making immersion effortless. This is an action title that nails visuals, feel, and pacing all at once.
2. Rise of the Ronin
Rise of the Ronin immediately struck me as “an open-world hardcore samurai action game.” Set in Japan’s Bakumatsu period—a time of social unrest and shifting powers—I step into the role of a ronin navigating chaos, fighting, and shaping my own path.

Its combat system captures the authenticity of samurai duels—there’s no button-mashing here. Battles are about waiting for the right moment and striking at an opening. The “stance” and “stamina bar” mechanics force me to balance attack and defense; aggressive overextension leaves me open to counters, while excessive caution puts me at a disadvantage. This rhythm control makes every duel feel like a life-or-death showdown.
Unlike traditional samurai action games, Rise of the Ronin introduces open-world exploration. Between tense duels, I can ride through picturesque countryside, encounter random events, take on challenges, and even make faction choices that influence the story’s direction. The fusion of hardcore combat and free exploration means I discover something new every time I launch the game.
3. Final Fantasy XVI
While the Final Fantasy series has long been known for its RPG roots, Final Fantasy XVI is without a doubt an action-heavy installment. It abandons the traditional turn-based system in favor of real-time combat, and with the involvement of a battle designer from the Devil May Cry series, the combat feels incredibly satisfying.
As Clive, I can seamlessly switch between different Eikon powers in battle, each offering unique skill sets and visual effects. Phoenix’s high-speed charges, Titan’s heavy guard smashes, Ramuh’s lightning chain attacks—these abilities aren’t just flashy; they can also completely shift the tide of battle.
Boss fights are breathtaking, often as grand as cinematic set pieces. Sometimes, the fight is no longer about comparing stats but about pushing reaction speed, movement, and skill chaining to their limits. When I manage to pull off a clutch victory at low health, the rush is so addictive I could jump right back in for another round.
4. Lies of P
This is a soulslike action game, but its world and art style immediately stood out to me—Victorian-inspired steampunk cities, mysterious and dangerous mechanical foes, and a dark fairy-tale narrative steeped in eerie charm.
Combat in Lies of P is paced and punishing, offering little room for error. Every block and dodge must be precisely timed, or I risk being taken out by a single enemy combo. The weapon system is also unique; I can collect different types of weapons and customize them by combining parts—say, attaching the blade of one sword to the hilt of another—to create tools that suit my personal rhythm.
Boss battles are the crown jewels of this game. Their attack patterns exude pressure, and they often change phases mid-fight, forcing me to adapt on the fly. The satisfaction of finally defeating them after repeated failures is unmatched by any easy-going title.

5. Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
If the previous games focus on human or monster duels, Armored Core VI is all about mech-on-mech combat at the highest speed and complexity. As FromSoftware’s latest mecha action release, it raises the bar in both sense of speed and operational depth.
The mechs I pilot can dash at blistering speeds, hover midair, and unleash bursts of firepower in an instant. Each battle feels like high-speed aerial combat, with reflexes pushed to the extreme. Sometimes, enemy attacks come almost instantaneously, requiring me to dodge the moment a signal flashes.
The mech customization system is dangerously addictive. From weapon loadouts to boosters, armor, and energy systems, every tweak dramatically changes combat style. It means I’m strategizing not only on the battlefield but also in the hangar before the fight begins.
Looking back at these five action masterpieces, I’ve realized they share one core trait despite their different styles: each constantly pushes my limits, making me grow through cycles of failure and breakthrough. Whether it’s the fast-paced, blade-flashing duels of Stellar Blade, the decisive one-strike samurai showdowns in Rise of the Ronin, or the intense, high-speed mech warfare of Armored Core VI, they all embody the essence of action gaming—instant reflexes perfectly paired with sustained exhilaration.
For me, the charm of these games lies not just in finishing them, but in the growth they inspire—from early panic and clumsy play to mastering rhythms and techniques, until finally being able to face any challenge head-on without fear. That process of growth itself is an extreme experience I can’t get enough of.
